Get matched with a licensed proBuilding a house from scratch in Hollywood is less about construction than about sequence and decisions. The build itself is well understood; what makes projects run long is a decision that was not made when the schedule needed it, and the resulting gap ripples through every trade that follows.
The contract type matters more here than on any other job. Fixed price puts the risk on the builder and tends to produce a defensive allowance structure. Cost plus puts it on you and needs real trust plus open books. Neither is wrong, and a builder who explains why they prefer one is telling you something useful about how they work.
Ask to see a house they finished two or three years ago, not one just handed over. New construction looks perfect at completion. What you want to know is how it settled, whether the doors still close, and whether the owner would use them again.
Class B (General Building) is the classification for building a structure from the ground up. CSLB defines the general building contractor as one whose principal business involves structures requiring at least two unrelated building trades, and new construction is the clearest case of it.
Every builder on this page holds an active Class B (General Building) licence at a Hollywood address, and the number links to the CSLB record. Check it before any deposit, and keep the down payment inside the limit California sets for home improvement contracts.
A licence does not describe capacity, and capacity is the thing that separates builders. A firm running two houses is a different proposition from one running fifteen, and neither is wrong for every client. Ask how many they have under construction right now and who will be on site daily. The answer tells you more about your experience than any credential will.
Every licence number below links to its record at cslb.ca.gov, where you can confirm status and expiry yourself.

Call three recent references
Ask each contractor for three jobs finished in the last year, then actually call them. Ask what went wrong and how it was handled — every project has something, and the answer tells you more than a list of successes.

Licence first. References second. Reviews last. Why that order.

Fixed price sets a number and the builder carries the overrun risk, which usually means conservative allowances. Cost plus bills actual cost with a fee, so you carry the risk and see the real numbers. Ask which the builder prefers and why — the reasoning tells you how they work.
The register lists 14 with an active Class B licence at a Hollywood address, and 23,270 across Los Angeles County. 14 with a Hollywood address · 3,410 across Los Angeles. 1 backing classification clear the listing threshold at Hollywood addresses; 30 are served from the wider Los Angeles pool. That figure covers general building broadly rather than custom homes specifically, since the state does not record that distinction.
California caps the down payment on a home improvement contract at 10 percent of the price or 1,000 dollars, whichever is less. New construction contracts can differ, so ask the builder to explain the payment schedule and how it ties to completed milestones rather than dates.
No. We show what the CSLB register records — classification, licence number and status — and link you to the source. Judging a builder means calling references, visiting finished houses, and reading the contract carefully. The licence is where that starts, not where it ends.
