Get matched with a licensed proDemolition in California is regulated work even when the structure looks ready to fall. Utility disconnects, asbestos surveys, dust control and neighbor notification all precede the first swing of a hammer on commercial jobs, and many residential ones too.
Selective interior demolition for a remodel is a different discipline from bringing down a whole structure. Load path, shoring and what stays protected matter. Ask whether the crew has worked in occupied buildings where noise and dust limits apply.
Neighbor notification requirements apply on some demolition permits in dense blocks. Ask whether the contractor posts the permit and handles dust fencing at the property line.
Class C-21 (Building Moving and Demolition) covers building moving and demolition — the classification CSLB issues for wrecking, dismantling and removing structures. It is not general building, and hazardous material abatement requires separate certifications. Load-bearing wall removal requires shoring designed for the loads above, and demolition contractors should not improvise that engineering.
Contractors listed hold an active Class C-21 (Building Moving and Demolition) licence at a California address. Demolition permits in California route through the building department with jurisdiction over your address, and the contractor should name the submittal timeline. Hazardous materials discovered during demo stop work until tested, and abatement is a separate scope from standard demolition. Photograph utilities and asbestos surveys before work starts because disputes are easier with dated images.
Licence status does not prove a firm tests for lead paint before disturbing pre-1978 surfaces. Ask what survey they require on older homes. Protected trees on the lot may have root protection zones that limit equipment paths, and violations can carry fines beyond the demo bid.
Salvageable fixtures and lumber are sometimes worth separating before haul-off. Ask whether the contractor offers salvage sorting or treats everything as debris.

Most structure removals need a demolition permit from the building department with jurisdiction over your address, including utility clearance signatures. Starting without one can stop the job and trigger fines.
Disturbing asbestos requires contractors with the proper certification, which is separate from Class C-21 (Building Moving and Demolition). A demolition contractor should stop and refer when suspect materials appear.
Sorting requirements and disposal sites vary. The contractor should name the hauler and recycling rate for concrete and metal.
