Get matched with a licensed proFence work in California looks simple until property lines, setback rules and neighbor relations enter the picture. A fence on the wrong side of a survey pin becomes an expensive do-over, and height limits differ between front, side and rear yards.
Ask whether the contractor locates the boundary or expects you to provide a survey. On older lots, the fence that has been there for thirty years is not necessarily on the legal line. Clarify who pays if the city requires it moved after inspection.
HOA design review, when it applies, is separate from the building permit. A contractor can build to code and still fail association approval if materials were not submitted early.
Class C-13 (Fencing) is the fencing classification — CSLB defines it for contractors whose principal business is constructing, altering or repairing fences. It is a standalone specialty, not part of general building. Wind load on tall privacy panels may require heavier posts than decorative picket fences, and the scope should state post size rather than assume it.
Listed contractors hold an active Class C-13 (Fencing) licence at a California address with the number linked to the register. Check it before a deposit, because fence contracts are often smaller but still regulated. Soil type at post holes affects concrete volume, and sandy soil may need oversized footings compared with clay.
The register cannot tell you whether a crew sets posts below the frost line or uses adequate concrete. Ask for photos of posts before backfill on a recent job.
Gate hardware that sags within a year usually traces to undersized posts or hinges rated below the panel weight. Specify post size and hinge grade in the scope, not only panel style.
