Get matched with a licensed proGrading and paving in California determines how water leaves your property and how heavy equipment reaches the building pad. Cut slopes, compactor passes and asphalt thickness are engineering decisions even on a driveway extension.
A paving quote that only names square footage is incomplete. Base rock depth, geotextile under weak soils and edge restraints at the street interface all affect how long the surface lasts. Ask what base section the contractor is proposing and why.
Stormwater regulations in developed areas may require detention or permeable sections even on private driveways. Ask whether the paving scope includes any drainage structure beyond the wearing surface.
Earthwork and paving are Class C-12 (Earthwork and Paving) scope — the classification CSLB issues for moving earth and installing paved surfaces as a principal trade. It is distinct from general building and from concrete flatwork performed as part of a structure. Compare dewatering plans when the cut sits below the seasonal groundwater table, because pumping costs can exceed grading if not priced early.
Each contractor here holds an active Class C-12 (Earthwork and Paving) licence recorded at a California address. Verify the number on the CSLB site before work starts, especially on projects that disturb more than a few hundred square feet. Surface drainage should discharge to an approved point, not toward the garage slab, and the grading plan should show flow arrows.
Licence status does not tell you whether a crew compacts in lifts or rolls a thin base. Ask what density tests they use and who signs off before paving begins.
Compaction testing logs should be kept when the geotechnical report requires them. A contractor who cannot produce test results on request is not documenting the work the engineer assumed.

Approach work, curb modifications and drainage changes often require permits from the building department with jurisdiction over your address. A like-for-like resurface on private property may be exempt, but confirm before ordering asphalt.
Base depth, asphalt mix and edge preparation vary widely. Compare the section detail in writing, not just the top price.
Request the same section detail — base rock depth, compaction method and asphalt thickness — from each bidder. Price without section is not comparable.
