Get matched with a licensed proRefinishing removes a thin layer of the floor and puts a new finish on what is left, so the first question is always how much wood is available to take. A solid floor can usually be sanded several times across its life; an engineered floor has a wear layer measured in millimetres and may only take one pass, or none.
The second question is dust and fumes, because you will be living with both. Ask what containment is used, whether the sander is vacuum-attached, and how long the finish needs before furniture returns. Oil-based and water-based finishes differ sharply on smell, drying time and how they age — a contractor who explains the trade-off rather than defaulting to one is telling you something useful.
Refinishing sits under Class C-15 (Flooring and Floor Covering), the same specialty classification as installing and repairing floors. CSLB licenses the flooring trade as a whole rather than splitting it by task.
Each contractor listed holds an active licence in that classification at a Sherman Oaks address, and the number links to the CSLB record. Because refinishing is destructive and irreversible, checking that record before work starts is worth the minute it takes.
The register cannot tell you how much wood a contractor will take off, and that is the decision you cannot undo. An aggressive first pass produces a flat floor quickly and costs you a future refinish; a careful one may leave some character and buy you another twenty years. Ask which approach they take and why, and ask them to measure before quoting rather than after starting. Ask what happens if they find damage under the old finish, because they often do. A contractor with a stated process for that is describing experience; one who says it will be fine is guessing on your floor. Get the answer before the sander is on site.

Licence first. References second. Reviews last. Why that order.
Get matched with a licensed proThese sit under the same Class C-15 (Flooring and Floor Covering) licence, so the same contractors are qualified for them.
A solid floor can usually take several passes across its lifetime, depending on thickness and how much has already been removed. An engineered floor is limited by its wear layer and may only take one, or none. Ask for the thickness to be checked before sanding is agreed.
The register shows 15 holding an active C-15 licence at a Sherman Oaks address, and 1,177 across Los Angeles County. This classification covers refinishing, repair and installation alike.
They differ on drying time, smell, and how the colour ages — oil tends to warm over time, water-based stays closer to the raw tone. Neither is simply better. Ask to see both in a finished home rather than on a sample board.
Less than you fear if extraction and containment are used properly, more than you want regardless. Ask specifically whether sanders are vacuum-attached and how rooms are sealed off, and get the answer before the quote is accepted.
Screen-and-recoat work often does not, but full sand-through jobs that disturb lead paint or change ventilation may. Confirm with LADBS when the scope is more than a light refresh.
