Get matched with a licensed proOrnamental metal in California covers railings, gates, stair stringers and decorative façades where fabrication and field welding meet architecture. Shop drawings and finish samples should be approved before steel is cut.
Exterior metal needs the right galvanizing or powder coat for coastal exposure. Ask what coating system is specified and what maintenance it expects — matte finishes on handrails show wear quickly in high-traffic entries.
Powder coat colors shift slightly between batches. Order touch-up paint or an extra length of railing from the same batch if future additions are likely.
Class C-23 (Ornamental Metal) is ornamental metal — CSLB defines it for fabricating and installing decorative and functional metalwork. Structural steel erection is a different classification when load-bearing frames are the scope. Shop lead time for custom railings often exceeds field installation, so fabrication schedule should appear in the contract.
Listed contractors hold an active Class C-23 (Ornamental Metal) licence at a California address with register-linked numbers. Welding on structural members may trigger additional engineering review through the building department with jurisdiction over your address. Dissimilar metals in contact can galvanically corrode at coastal sites, and the specification should name compatible fasteners. Approve a mock-up panel before full fabrication because powder coat color shifts are hard to fix later.
The register does not show whether a shop has CNC capability or builds by hand. Visit the yard if the detail complexity is high. Powder coat thickness affects durability on handrails, and thin coat at edges is where corrosion starts on exterior steel.
Field welding on galvanized steel requires repair of the zinc coating at welds. Ask what corrosion protection is applied after field welds on exterior railings. Payment should track inspection milestones in California, not calendar dates alone, so you can verify ornamental metal progress before each draw. Guardrails and stairs that affect egress usually need plan check through the building department with jurisdiction over your address. Shop drawings stamped by an engineer may be required.
Any unprotected steel will rust. The specification should name coating type and warranty, not just the design.
Coating systems carry manufacturer warranties when applied to spec. Get the warranty document name in the contract, not a verbal promise.
