Get matched with a licensed proPainting in Altadena is surface preparation far more than color selection. Peeling on stucco usually means moisture or poor primer, not bad paint. A quote that skips prep description is incomplete.
Lead paint rules apply to pre-1978 housing. Disturbing more than the EPA threshold requires certified procedures. Ask how the contractor tests and contains dust on older homes.
Stucco texture governs how much paint the surface absorbs. A painter should specify primer system for unpainted stucco separately from a previously coated wall.
Class C-33 (Painting and Decorating) — painting and decorating — is the CSLB classification for applying paint, varnish and similar coatings. It does not include drywall installation or plaster repair unless separately licensed. Spray application on exteriors needs wind and overspray control that brush work does not, and neighbors notice overspray on cars.
Painters on this page hold an active Class C-33 (Painting and Decorating) licence at a Altadena address. Exterior work on multi-family buildings may need LA County Building and Safety notification when scaffolding is involved. Caulk at stucco-to-wood joints should be elastomeric and paintable, and it is part of prep not a separate trade by default. Label each paint can with room name because touch-up color match fails when bases get mixed up.
A licence does not guarantee sharp cut lines. Request references for interiors with dark colors and exterior stucco — those jobs show skill quickly. Dark colors on south walls fade faster, and the painter should note extra coats or UV-resistant product on those elevations.
Interior paint with high sheen shows every drywall imperfection. A painter should recommend sheen by room function, not only color chips from the store. Payment should track inspection milestones in Altadena, not calendar dates alone, so you can verify painting progress before each draw. Most cosmetic repaints do not, but lead-safe work rules still apply on older housing. LA County Building and Safety can clarify when containment is required.
Manufacturer and substrate condition decide. Two coats over proper primer is typical; one coat bids are often missing prep.
Recoat and rain windows are on the can label. A painter should schedule phases around the forecast, not ignore it.
