Plastering & Stucco in California — CSLB-Licensed Contractors

What to Expect from Plastering & Stucco in California

Plaster and stucco in California must bond to lath, cure in layers and shed water. Synthetic one-coat systems behave differently from traditional three-coat work, and the wrong choice on an old building can trap moisture.

Cracks follow movement joints — or the lack of them. Ask where the contractor places control joints on large walls and how they integrate with windows.

Color in the finish coat is harder to patch than paint. Integral color samples should be approved in outdoor light, not under garage fluorescents.

• Three-coat stucco and synthetic systems
• Interior plaster and skim coats
• Lath installation and corrosion-resistant fasteners
• Cement and acrylic finish textures
• Patching and color matching on existing walls
• Curing, hydration and weather protection
• Lath inspection hold before brown coat
• Cure misting schedule in dry weather
• Hydration schedule for the first seventy-two hours

Why CSLB Licensing Matters

Class C-35 (Lathing and Plastering) covers lathing and plastering — the CSLB scope for cement plaster, interior plaster and related work. Drywall is a separate classification. Expansion joints in long stucco walls prevent random cracking, and joint layout should be on the plan before lath goes up.

Contractors hold an active Class C-35 (Lathing and Plastering) licence at a California address. New stucco often needs inspection by the building department with jurisdiction over your address at lath and sometimes at scratch coat. Kick-out flashing at roof-to-stucco intersections prevents water running behind the cladding, and it should be installed before lath. Keep sprinklers off fresh stucco for the cure window because direct spray erodes the cement face.

The register cannot tell you whether a crew wets curing coats in summer heat. Ask what they do when temperatures exceed manufacturer limits. Stucco at deck-to-wall joints needs a reglet or counter-flashing, not caulk alone, to keep water out of the assembly.

Synthetic stucco systems require manufacturer-trained applicators for warranty. Ask which system brand is specified and whether the crew is certified for that brand. Payment should track inspection milestones in California, not calendar dates alone, so you can verify plastering stucco progress before each draw.
