Get matched with a licensed proTile work in California fails in the substrate, not the surface. Waterproof membranes in showers, crack isolation on slabs and proper thinset coverage matter more than the tile brand.
Large-format tile needs flat walls and back buttering. A contractor who dry-layouts only at the doorway is not planning for lippage in the field.
Natural stone often needs sealing before and after grout. The setter should name sealer products compatible with the stone and the grout color you chose.
Class C-54 (Ceramic and Mosaic Tile) covers ceramic and mosaic tile — CSLB authorizes setting tile and related materials. Plumbing fixtures are separate trades. Shower bench and niche waterproofing must tie into the same membrane system as the pan, not be patched in later.
Tile contractors hold an active Class C-54 (Ceramic and Mosaic Tile) licence at a California address. Wet areas may need the building department with jurisdiction over your address plumbing or building inspections when drains move. Caulk at tub-to-tile corners should be silicone, not grout, because grout cracks at that movement joint within months. Keep foot traffic off fresh grout for the time printed on the bag because premature use ruins joint color.
Licence status does not prove flood testing before tile goes on a shower pan. Ask explicitly if that test is included. Epoxy grout in commercial kitchens resists staining but is harder to install, and the setter should have experience with that product line.
Heated floor mats need a dedicated thermostat and sometimes a floor sensor in mortar. Ask whether electrical rough-in is coordinated before tile locks the layout. Payment should track inspection milestones in California, not calendar dates alone, so you can verify tile progress before each draw.
