Get matched with a licensed proReplacing a water heater in Pomona is a same-day job when it is a like-for-like swap, and a much larger one when it is not. The variables are the fuel, the venting, and whether the unit is going back where the old one was. Change any of those and the day turns into a week.
Tankless conversions are where costs surprise people. A tankless gas unit usually needs a larger gas line and a different vent, and an electric one often needs a dedicated high-amperage circuit the panel may not have spare. Ask for those two things to be checked before the quote, not after the old unit is out.
Seismic strapping, a drain pan, and an expansion tank are code requirements in much of California rather than upsells. If a quote does not mention them, ask why — it usually means the quote is not complete rather than that the work is cheaper.
Water heater work is plumbing, and Class C-36 (Plumbing) is the classification CSLB issues for it. Where a tankless conversion needs a new circuit, that electrical work falls under a different classification — a point worth raising, because it decides whether one firm can complete the job.
Each contractor listed holds an active Class C-36 (Plumbing) licence at a Pomona address, and the number links to the CSLB record. It takes seconds to check and it is the one claim on this page you never have to take on trust.
Water heaters are also the job most often done without a permit, and an unpermitted installation can surface years later during a sale. Ask whether the work will be permitted and who pulls it. A contractor who treats that as a normal part of the price is telling you something about how they work.

Licence first. References second. Reviews last. Why that order.

It depends on your gas line, your panel capacity and how much hot water the household actually uses. The unit is only part of the cost — the gas line or circuit upgrade is often the larger half. Ask for both quoted separately so you can see the real comparison.
The register lists 25 with an active C-36 licence at a Pomona address, and 4,613 across Los Angeles County. That covers plumbing broadly, so the same contractors handle repipes, fixtures and drain work as well as water heaters.
In most California jurisdictions, yes — it is a gas or electrical appliance connected to the water supply. Requirements are set by Building and Safety Division. An unpermitted install can become a problem when the house is sold.
A conventional tank typically runs eight to twelve years depending on water quality and whether the anode rod was ever replaced. Ask the installer where the anode is and how to check it — the maintenance that extends the life is simple and almost nobody is told about it.
