MDF vs. Hardwood Moulding

The right material depends on the installation environment, whether the trim will be painted or stained, and budget.

MDF Moulding

Medium-density fiberboard, manufactured from wood fibers bonded with resin. Machines to consistent profiles without grain variation and accepts paint well. Costs less than hardwood, but isn’t recommended for moisture-exposed areas like bathrooms, high-humidity kitchens, or exterior applications.

Hardwood Moulding

Milled from solid species — oak, maple, poplar, cherry, mahogany, walnut, and redwood in National Hardwood’s stock. Accepts stain and clear finish so the grain stays visible, resists impact better than MDF in high-traffic areas, and can be refinished over time. Costs more than MDF but lasts longer.

Primed MDF

Arrives with a factory-applied primer coat, cutting prep time and giving consistent paint adhesion. A common choice for new construction and renovation projects with painted-trim specifications.

Baseboards, Casings & Crown Moulding

National Hardwood stocks profiles for standard residential and commercial applications, plus custom sizing on request.

Baseboards

Heights from 3" to 7" in colonial, ranch, contemporary, and custom profiles. Available in MDF, primed MDF, oak, maple, poplar, and specialty hardwoods. Taller baseboards suit higher ceilings and formal rooms; standard 3"–4" fits most residential applications.

Door & Window Casings

Colonial, craftsman, ranch, and contemporary styles, 2-1/4" to 3-1/2" wide, in MDF and hardwood. Matching casing to baseboard profiles keeps trim consistent throughout a space.

Crown Moulding

Profiles from 2-1/4" up to 6"+ in traditional cove, ogee, dentil, and contemporary styles. Smaller profiles suit standard 8-foot ceilings; larger sizes fit taller ceilings without losing proportion.

Chair Rail & Panel Moulding

Installs at chair-back height to protect walls and mark a visual transition point. Panel moulding builds decorative wall frames and wainscoting. Stocked in both MDF and hardwood.

Species Coordinated to Your Flooring

Sourcing moulding and flooring separately is a common way projects end up with a near-match that reads as an error rather than a design choice. National Hardwood stocks moulding in the same hardwood species available for flooring, and the team can advise on stain matching when coordinating with previously installed floors.

  • Red Oak — The workhorse of the LA market — widely available, consistent grain, accepts stain predictably.
  • White Oak — Increasingly popular for modern and transitional interiors. Pairs well with wire-brushed and matte finishes.
  • Walnut — Deep, rich tones for high-end residential and commercial applications.
  • Maple — Tight grain, light color — a fit for contemporary and Scandinavian-influenced spaces.
  • Cherry, Mahogany & Hickory — Additional hardwood species stocked for trim that needs to match a specific flooring species or stain tone.
  • Poplar & MDF — For painted trim applications where cost-efficiency matters without sacrificing a clean finish.

Custom Profile Matching for Historic LA Homes

Older and historic homes often use moulding profiles no longer in standard production — a common challenge in Craftsman bungalows, Spanish Colonial and Revival homes, and Mid-Century properties throughout the LA market. National Hardwood can match an existing profile by creating a custom knife set for its moulding equipment — bring a sample to the Van Nuys showroom for a profile-matching consultation. Custom work is available in oak, maple, poplar, walnut, cherry, mahogany, and other hardwood species, in both finger-jointed (painted applications) and solid (stained or clear-finished) configurations.

Licensed contractors and flooring professionals qualify for trade pricing on volume orders, with delivery coordinated throughout Los Angeles County, Ventura County, and the surrounding area. National Hardwood's staff can also assist with material takeoffs from project specifications and floor plans.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you carry moulding that matches your hardwood flooring species?

Yes. National Hardwood stocks moulding in the same species available for flooring, including red oak, white oak, walnut, and maple. This makes it straightforward to coordinate trim with a floor installation, whether working with raw material or prefinished product.

Can you match existing moulding profiles in older Los Angeles homes?

Custom profile production is available for projects where standard profiles won’t match existing trim — a common situation in Craftsman bungalows, Spanish Revival homes, and other pre-war architecture throughout LA. Contact the showroom with measurements or a sample to discuss options.

Is trade or contractor pricing available?

Yes. National Hardwood offers trade pricing for licensed professionals. Contact the showroom directly or visit in person to set up a trade account.

Are prefinished moulding options available?

Both raw and prefinished options are stocked depending on species and profile. The team can advise on which option fits a given project and finish requirements.

Is National Hardwood a True Local Pros contractor?

No. National Hardwood Flooring & Moulding is a preferred supplier partner of True Local Pros — they supply materials, not installation services. If you need a licensed hardwood flooring installer, use the True Local Pros contractor finder on this page.

What other products does National Hardwood carry?

In addition to moulding and trim, National Hardwood stocks solid and engineered hardwood flooring, custom staircases, decking, fencing, siding, ceiling planks, and tools and sundries — see the full supplier hub for every category.
