Get matched with a licensed proRepair work is diagnosis before carpentry. A cupped board, a hollow-sounding plank and a gap that opens each winter have three different causes, and replacing boards without finding the cause just moves the problem along the floor. Water from a dishwasher, a slab without a barrier and seasonal humidity all look similar at first glance.
The hardest part of a repair is usually the match. Older floors in Sherman Oaks homes have oxidised and been walked on for years; new boards of the same species will not match until they have aged, and sometimes a repair needs to be blended and refinished across a whole room to disappear. Ask to see a repair the contractor has done, not just an installation.
Floor repair falls under Class C-15 (Flooring and Floor Covering), the specialty classification covering surface preparation and floor covering work. It is the same classification as installation, because California licenses the trade rather than the size of the job.
Every contractor here holds an active licence in that classification recorded at a Sherman Oaks address, with the number linked to the register. For a small repair the licence matters just as much: it is the difference between someone accountable to a state board and someone who is not.
What a licence cannot tell you is whether someone is good at matching, which is the entire job on a repair. Two installers of equal competence will produce visibly different results on a twenty-year-old floor, and the difference is patience with stain and sheen rather than skill with a saw. Ask to see a repair up close, in daylight, in a home rather than in a photograph — photographs flatter repairs. If a contractor cannot show you one, that is worth knowing before they start on yours. Ask too whether they will stand behind the match, and get whatever they say in writing.

Licence first. References second. Reviews last. Why that order.

Often, yes — boards can be woven into existing runs. Whether the repair disappears depends on how far the surrounding floor has aged and whether the area needs blending or refinishing afterwards. Ask to see a completed repair before deciding.
The register lists 15 with an active C-15 licence at a Sherman Oaks address, and 1,177 across Los Angeles County. Repair, installation and refinishing share this classification, so the same contractors appear across all three pages.
Usually moisture. Wood takes on and gives up water with the air around it and with anything below it, so cupping and gapping tend to point at humidity, a leak, or a slab without a barrier. A contractor who measures before quoting is worth more than one who does not.
No. We list what the CSLB register records and link you to it. Any warranty is between you and the contractor, in writing, and worth agreeing before work starts.
Localized board replacement usually does not, but repairs tied to structural subfloor work or abatement may. Ask LADBS when scope includes more than surface boards.
